Professionals and Private Fostering

Private foster carers are legally required to notify the Council.

Many do not, often because they do not know that they have to.

Informing the Council will enable us to check whether or not the child is being properly cared for.

It is vital that we are aware of such arrangements so that we can safeguard and promote the welfare of potentially vulnerable children.

Ideally, notification should come from the carers and parents.

Professionals from education, health and social care can also play an important role in explaining to private foster carers and parents that they have a duty to notify the local council.

Professionals involved have the duty to notify us if they are not satisfied that we have been, or will be, notified of an arrangement, so that we can then carry out our responsibilities.
