Examples of possible licensing conditions

Conditions are intended to promote the licensing objectives:

  • the prevention of crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • the prevention of public nuisance; and
  • the protection of children from harm.

Conditions can be suggested by premises owners, or sought by interested parties such as residents and required by responsible authorities such as the police. Conditions must be applied on a case-by-case basis.

Examples of areas where conditions can be applied to support licensing objectives:
(this list is not exhaustive)

  • Restriction on opening hours
  • Not allowing certain activities or limiting times when they can take place
  • ‘Wind down time’ when no alcohol can be served or music played
  • Calming measures e.g. free food, lowered volume of music for final hour
  • Provision of CCTV
  • Text and radio pager communications for staff and direct links to the police
  • Provision of door supervisors
  • Bottle banks
  • Insistence on plastic containers and/or toughened glass
  • Restrictions on drinking areas
  • Capacity limits
  • Proof of age cards
  • Crime prevention notices
  • Responsible drinks promotions
  • Alteration to layout of premises, including provision of more seating
  • Control of noise and vibration
  • Control measures to combat noxious smells
  • Measures to tackle light pollution
