Food Business Registration

All food business operators must inform the Council of their food business operation - this is known as ‘Registration’. Registration of a food business allows us to maintain a Food Premises Register. Our Register contains the details of all food businesses operating in Haringey.

This helps us to prioritise our food safety inspection programme. The frequency of inspections is determined by risk and includes the type of food business activity.

Who needs to register?

Do you undertake any storage, preparation, distribution and/or selling of food? If yes, then you are a operating a food business. Food businesses will include restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, canteens, market stalls, mobile catering vans, food delivery vans and home caterers.

Food business operators are required to register their new food business with us at least 28 days before opening.

If you use vehicles for your food business in connection with permanent premises such as a shop or warehouse, you only need to tell us how many vehicles you have - you do not need to register each vehicle separately. If you have one or more vehicles but no permanent premises, you must tell us where they are normally kept.

The majority of premises have to be registered. However, certain premises are exempt from registration, for example those that are already registered for food law purposes, certain agricultural premises, motor cars, tents and marquees (but not stalls), some domestic premises and some village halls. You should contact us if you think you might be exempt.

How to register?

You can Register a Food Premises online, or you can complete the application form, which can be found in the attached files section below.

If the registration form is sent to the wrong address, the application will not take effect until it is received at the proper address. If you use premises in more than one local authority area, you must register with each authority separately.

  • There is no charge for registration
  • A food registration application cannot be refused
  • You must complete all the boxes that apply to the business activity
  • Answer all the questions and provide all the information requested
  • Seasonal businesses operating for a certain period each year should provide the dates when they trade
  • It is an offence to give information that you know is false

If you have any questions, please contact us.

What happens to the information given on the form?

We will enter the details on our Food Premises Register. The Register of addresses and the type of food business carried out is available to the public.

Any other information provided will not be available to the public or disclosed outside of the Council, Local Government Departments or Government Agencies. The details will be used for the purpose of registration, enforcement and the protection of public funds.

What about changes?

Food businesses need to re-register if there is a change to the type of business activity, address (ie where moveable premises are kept) and/or ownership.

Some food manufacturers, food processors and catering butchers handling products of animal origin may need to be approved by us or by the Meat Hygiene Service under EC Regulation 853/2004. Premises requiring approval must not operate before approval is granted.

If you are uncertain whether your business needs to be approved, contact the Commercial Environmental Health team (details below).
