What Is “Scores On The Doors?”
Scores on the Doors is a London-wide Pilot Scheme that enables the public to check on the results of the latest inspection conducted by the council’s Commercial Environmental Health Team for any food business within the borough, including restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets and pubs. The scheme aims:
- To improve food hygiene standards within the Borough by recognising high achieving businesses and providing an incentive for other businesses.
- To provide the public with a more informed choice about where to eat, based on food safety, in an easy to understand way.
Food businesses in Haringey can be awarded up to five stars as part of the ‘Scores on the Doors’ pilot project, which will enable customers to easily check standards of hygiene and safety. Haringey Council will launch Scores on the Doors in October 2007 along with the majority of other London Boroughs.

How can I view the Score of a Food Business?
The score for each food business will be available via the Your London Website in the external links section below.
Food businesses will also be given a certificate and sticker showing their current star rating, which may be displayed for the public to see. Where the proprietor chooses to display the certificate and sticker this will be in a prominent location, for example the front of the premises where it is visible to customers from outside.

How will Food Businesses be rated?
The Haringey scheme is part of a London-wide pilot scheme supported by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Scores are based on the code of practice. During the inspection, food safety officers will take into account:
- Hygiene and safety
- Premises structure, and
- Confidence in management to handle food safely
Scores for 1,200 businesses in Haringey will be published on the website. The remaining businesses will be added as they are inspected.
Full details of the inspection process and how scores are assessed are available on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website in the external links section below.
In order for food businesses to achieve a favourable star rating attention must be paid to the three headings above. Those food businesses without a suitable food safety management system are advised to use the ‘Safer Food Better Business’ (SFBB) Pack. The pack was designed by the Food Standards Agency to help small businesses introduce a food safety management system. Further information can be found at the Safer Food Better Business website (see external links section below).
Please be advised the score is a snapshot of hygiene standards at the time of inspection by the officer and standards may have changed since.
