Radioactivity

The Radioactive Substance Act 1993 has placed a requirement on LA's to hold a public register of any nuclear activity within its locality or neighboring LA's; and to make such documents available to the public.

Haringey does not have any nuclear activities within the borough and there are no such activities within the neighbouring boroughs, and as required under the above act, the latest copy of RIFE-15 can be downloaded from the attached files section below. RIFE stands for Radioactivity in Food and the Environment and is the result of collaborative work between the FSA, EA, Northern Ireland EA, and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. The report gives a detailed assessment of radioactivity in food and the environment in the UK and the public’s exposure to radiation during 2009.

The report:

  • provides a detailed independent assessment of radioactivity within food and the environment
  • focuses on key information that shows radioactivity within food is well within safe levels
  • shows that the public’s exposure to authorised discharges and direct radiation around the 39 nuclear sites around the UK is within legal limits
  • provides an early indication where doses are likely to increase in future.
