Heartlands High School gets the finishing touches
Publication date: Wednesday 27 April 2011
Councillors and staff from Haringey Council have taken a behind the scenes look at Heartlands High School as the final sections of the £33m school are completed.
The school in Station Road, Wood Green is a key part of Haringey’s £200+million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme which is already improving teaching and learning facilities in the borough.
Heartlands High School opened to its first ever group of students in September this year, but reaches full completion on Wednesday 28 April.
Students and staff at Heartlands High School are already enjoying access to classroom spaces on four levels of the south teaching wing, as well as administration rooms. Students are also using ICT suites, science and food technology rooms, three multi use games areas, a dining hall and kitchen and cycle racks for up to 80 bikes. Now several new areas will be complete including: three floors of extra teaching and learning space - with 24 classrooms; a sports hall; an auditorium; dance studio; Learning Resource Centre; design technology classrooms; autistic spectrum Disorder (ASD) rooms and office space for staff.
On a recent visit to the school Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said:
"We're so close to realising our ambition of creating an outstanding school in Wood Green where everything is designed to enable students to succeed. The teaching taking place here is already very impressive, and completion of the final sections of the school will make it an even bigger asset to our young people and the wider community."
Improvements are also being made to Wood Green Common including new trees and fencing. Pupil safety has also been increased with two new zebra crossings and a new roundabout, both will be finished by end of April.
In preparation for the new school year a new entrance will be created in the North Wing. Additional works to extend the dining hall space with a new glass façade will be complete on 1 July.
Building contractors Willmott Dixon began work on the state-of-the-art school in August 2009.
There remains just one BSF which is yet to be completed; the project to transform Woodside High School, also in Wood Green.
