Haringey gets greener with new car club scheme

Monday 12 January 2009

Residents will be asked for views on proposed locations for more than 40 new car club vehicles being introduced in the borough.

We have awarded operator Streetcar the contract to operate Haringey’s car club scheme, which will offer members access to 41 car club vehicles at 22 locations across the borough.

We hope the scheme will encourage more residents to give up car ownership by offering them the alternative of paying for occasional car journeys on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The initiative will not only save people the cost of owning, insuring, taxing, maintaining and parking vehicles, it will also help the borough reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change.

Transport for London figures indicate that one car club vehicle in London can replace the need for 10 privately owned vehicles.

We plan to introduce the new car club vehicles from April this year. All residents have to do is register with Streetcar and then they can book the car out for any duration, from one hour upwards and from £4.95 per hour.

The vehicles will each have a permanent dedicated parking berth at locations around the borough.

Now we are asking residents for their views on the 22 proposed locations.

We aim to introduce additional car club vehicle locations as membership and demand across Haringey increases.

Further consultation will then take place on locations for the extra vehicles.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:

“We know there are many people in Haringey who own cars but rarely use them.

“We hope this new scheme will provide an incentive for these residents to give up car ownership and use the club vehicles instead when they need to make a journey by car. We also hope the car club will make people think twice before buying a second car for their family.

“This won’t only help us reduce congestion and ease parking pressures, it will also help us to cut carbon emissions from vehicles and in our aim of becoming London’s greenest borough.

“But we now want residents’ views on the locations for the vehicles so that we can make sure they’re in convenient places and will be well used.”

Residents can find out more about the car club scheme and join it by visiting Streetcar’s website (external link) or by calling 0845 644 8475.

The consultation will run from Thursday 15 January to 5 February 2009.
