Haringey extends furniture collection scheme

Friday 20 July 2007

A trial service enabling residents to have unwanted furniture collected from their homes and donated to people in need will be extended for another eight months, Haringey Council has announced.

The service is offered by the council in partnership with Tottenham-based charity ReStore Community Projects and Haringey Accord, and almost 120 households have had collections since the pilot scheme began in January 2007.

Now the council has agreed to extend the service until the end of March next year, when it will again be reviewed.

Under the scheme, ReStore will come round to residents' homes to collect any item of furniture, including beds, wardrobes, sofas and dining tables, as long as they are in a useable condition.

Up to six items of furniture can be picked up at any one time, at a cost of £16.84.

These items are then given to other people via a referral system with Haringey's Social Services and Housing Services, along with other agencies offering help to those living in poor conditions.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:

"The scheme has both major social and environmental benefits, as it means furniture can be reused by those in need of it, rather than simply being thrown away. It should also help us in our drive to clamp down on flytipping in the borough.

"I'm very pleased with the success of this scheme so far and I hope that many more residents will take advantage of the collections over the coming months."
