Haringey excels for affordable housing

Friday 21 September 2007

New figures show that Haringey Council has one of the best records in London for overseeing the creation of affordable housing.

A report published by housing charity Shelter shows that 63 per cent of new homes completed in Haringey between 2003 to 2006 were affordable. That was the second highest percentage in the capital and significantly above the 50 per cent target set by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.

By working closely with developers and Registered Social Landlords to encourage the creation of affordable housing in Haringey, the council is helping more residents to move out of temporary accommodation and off the borough's housing register.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Isidoros Diakides, said:

"There is a huge homelessness crisis and affordability gap across London and all local authorities are trying hard to increase the supply of affordable housing to meet the demand.

"For historical reasons our borough has relatively lower levels of social housing than the vast majority of Inner London boroughs. I am therefore really pleased that our efforts in Haringey seem to be more successful in this respect than those of most other authorities.

"The bottom line is that as a result of our successful efforts and our partnership with good housing associations hundreds more local families every year are being helped to find a decent affordable home.

"Nothing can be more rewarding for a politician than to see people getting out of the homelessness trap and being allowed to rebuild their families and their lives."
