Haringey Council strikes 'exciting' investment deal for sports centre

White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre is set for a massive refurbishment after Haringey Council secured a deal for an independent charity to permanently manage the facilities.

Fusion Lifestyle - who already operate the centre on a short-term contract - will continue to operate the centre long into the future after the council’s Cabinet approved a new 50-year lease on Tuesday night (9 July).

The deal, which was developed in consultation with users and community groups and will save taxpayers £478,000 a year, means that subject to planning permission, White Hart Lane could see a huge programme of investment, including:

  • 10 new five-a-side artificial pitches and one full-size pitch
  • A new indoor tennis 'dome' and outdoor courts
  • Comprehensive refurbishment of existing facilities and new fitness suite

As part of the agreement, all activities will continue to be available on a pay-as-you-play basis, while Fusion Lifestyle has indicated it will introduce a new concessionary pricing scheme.

Councillor Richard Watson, cabinet member for communities, said:

"This exciting deal represents great value for money and means better facilities for our residents.

"Fusion Lifestyle supports our aim to get more people in Haringey fit and active and we look forward to working with them and existing sports groups to create a community sports centre we can be proud of."

The charity took over the management of the borough’s other three leisure centres in December last year in a separate deal that will see £15million of investment and improvements.

Tim Mills, Director of Business Development at Fusion Lifestyle, said:

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to deliver a long-term solution at the much-loved Community Sports Centre in White Hart Lane. We look forward to working with the council and a range of other partners to reinvigorate the existing provision and to deliver some exciting new facilities."

Fusion Lifestyle will submit planning proposals for the new football and tennis facilities to the council later this autumn, before starting the new lease in April 2014.
