Students and staff at Woodside High School are to get a modern, new teaching block as part of Haringey Council’s Building Schools for the Future programme.
Ambitious plans for the Wood Green school have been approved by the council’s planning committee, giving a green light to a new two-storey building, including arts, music, and drama classrooms, an ICT hub room, and a Learning Resource Centre.
The new teaching facility is in addition to other benefits the project is already bringing to the school, such as improvements to its English, Maths and Science faculties, multi-use games areas, a drama studio, sports hall, a fitness gym, and a dance studio.
Commenting on the planned improvements, Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Lorna Reith said:
“This is a great example of money being invested wisely for both present students, and generations to come. The improvements will create an even better environment to enable the school to continue its rapid progress.”
Headteacher Joan Mcvittie, added:
“The staff and students are delighted by this further addition to our BSF build and would like to thank the council for their agreement and support. We know that this will have a significant impact on learning and will support our drive to raise attainment even further.”
The site in White Hart Lane is being transformed to create a £28million Inclusive Learning Campus, bringing together Woodside High with Moselle and William C Harvey special schools, and providing access for all students including those with disabilities. The project is due to be completed in autumn 2011.
In 2009 the school enjoyed a 20 per cent increase in the number of Year 11 pupils achieving more than five A-C grades across all subjects, while the number of pupils gaining more than five GCSEs, including Maths and English, increased by 10 per cent.
