Reusable furniture collection scheme launched in Haringey
Wednesday 10 January 2007
Residents across Haringey can now donate unwanted furniture for use by people in need thanks to a new home collection service.
Haringey Council has teamed up with the Tottenham-based charity ReStore Community Projects and Haringey Accord to offer collections of furniture every Wednesday from 10 January 2007.
The new pilot service builds upon Haringey's existing collections of bulky waste. Residents can have up to six items of furniture picked up at any one time at a cost of £15.
Under the new scheme, ReStore will come round to residents' homes to collect any item of furniture, including beds, wardrobes, sofas and dining tables, so long as they are in a useable condition.
They will then be given to other people via a referral system with Haringey Social Services and Housing departments, as well as other agencies offering help to those living in poor conditions.
The pilot scheme will run initially for six months, but Haringey hopes to extend it if it proves successful.
Executive Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:
"I'm very pleased this project is being launched in Haringey. It offers a simple and cheap way of disposing of bulky furniture, which can sometimes be really difficult to get rid of.
"Not only will the scheme help ensure that those in need can make use of good quality furniture, it should also cut down on the amount of furniture that is dumped illegally around the borough.
"I would like to thank ReStore Community Projects for agreeing to work with us on this scheme and I hope many residents will choose to make use of the new service."
If you wish to donate furniture or have bulky waste collected from your home, call the Haringey Accord Call Centre on 020 8885 7700.

Alternatively, you can ensure your bulky items or furniture are recycled or reused by taking them to one of Haringey's two Reuse and Recycle centres at Park View Road, Tottenham, or Hornsey High Street.
