Artist’s impression of the Learning Campus.Work is set to start on an ambitious new Learning Campus at Broadwater Farm in Tottenham - the first of its kind anywhere in the country.

The building in Adams Road, dubbed an ‘inclusive learning campus’, will bring together support for children with different educational needs under one roof – including:

  • A 100 place special school formed by the primary departments of William C Harvey and Moselle special schools
  • Broadwater Farm primary school
  • The existing children’s centre

The campus will provide new teaching spaces around a central shared zone, housing a hall, gym, library and hydrotherapy pool.  There will also be an amphitheatre, sensory garden, wildlife pond and horticultural area, external teaching, hard and soft play areas, sand and water play area; and a multi use games area. Landscaping and a central community area are other important parts of the project

Cllr Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people, said:

“The campus will bring a huge boost to the area’s young people and wider community – and will be able to cater for a broad range of needs of local children.”

She added:

“A great deal of effort has gone into the planning stage of this programme – not least by local families - and it will be great to see it move from the drawing board to the building site.”

Building contractors Mulalley have been appointed to work on the project with building set to start over the next few days. The new campus in Adams Road Tottenham is to be built in phases so as to minimise disruption to the schools and the local community.

Mulalley Director John Moore said:

“This project will see Mulalley and Haringey Council breaking new ground. This is the first school of its kind in this country and we are pleased to be part of it.

“All construction work will be done while taking into consideration the location of the school and how close it is to residents’ homes – and extra care will also be given to minimizing the disruption to children of each school who all have different needs.”

Key dates for when and where the work will take place are:

  • July / August 2010 - Work starts on building the new campus
  • By September 2011 – about half the new building will be finished
  • The second part of the work will be completed by September 2012, with any remaining landscaping and external works completed by early 2013
