St. Aidan’s Primary School

The winners of this award were nominated for their commitment to recycling and looking after the local environment. The children’s activities have included creating a safe battery disposal box for all the school to use and a battery disposal campaign including writing letters to local councillors.

Best Environmental Innovation

Victoria Johnson and her team of Volunteers at North East Haringey Greenspace Outreach

The winners of this award were nominated for innovation working with young people to improve the local environment. Their tireless efforts to improve Northumberland Park have led to a successful project of landscaping and tree planting on the Robert Burn Estate. The work continues in other areas of the borough including Blaydon Close N17, where it is being landscaped with new flower pots and hanging baskets. Residents have been particularly impressed with the way they are able to consult, listen and involve young people (aged 5-14 years) in the project and encouraging residents to take ownership of the project on completion of the works. There is a proactive approach to get the residents on training sessions to continue to learn and sustain what has been done.

Cleanest Business

Maxitech

The winners of this award are a not-for-profit organisation that reuses and recycles IT equipment and provides refurbished equipment to local community groups. They recently donated 10 PCs to the Haringey Silver Surfer initiative for older people. It provides training for unemployed and disadvantaged young people from the local area. Their activity has helped divert hundreds of pieces of IT equipment from landfill. They ensure that there is no dumping of toxic components from the equipment, and that no waste is sent overseas to be dumped. They have their own environmental policy to try and minimise the impact of their own activity.

Tottenham and Wood Green Friends of the Earth

The winners of this category were a group that lead community initiatives including distributing over 4,000 low energy light bulbs to residents in Haringey, especially in the most deprived parts of the borough. The group has also given out leaflets with information about energy conservation and how to switch to renewable electricity providers.

Best Contractor or Partner Team

West Green Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team

The winners of this category were nominated for their contribution to the community in ‘Safer’ theme of the Better Haringey programme; their activities have included running a project on the Broadwater Farm Estate for young people called ‘Off the street, less heat.’ This resulted in strengthening the bond of the community. Members of the community both young and mature witnessed this interaction between Police, mentors and other members of the community, resulting in a relaxed and new found ability to approach Police officers to ask questions and voice opinions. Particularly commended were PCs John Lambert and Tim Allpress.

Looking after one of the larger estate the winner has been nominated for his exceptional commitment to his duties and for always going the extra mile. He ensures the estate is clean and tidy, removes graffiti, gets smashed windows fixed and entry doors repaired. His work is appreciated by both residents and Councillors. He is always helpful to staff / contractors / police so that they do not miss any particular problem area.
