Get involved in Civic Life in Haringey - Public appointments
Civic Engagement is about getting involved in public life and can often involve taking up a public appointment. This could mean working for local public agencies such as the Police Service, Local Health Services or the Courts, and could include the following civic roles:
One of the key barriers to people becoming more involved in public life is often a lack of information. At Haringey we are hoping to help overcome this by bringing together information, here, about the variety of ways that you can get involved in civic life. We will also be highlighting ways to get involved at events arranged by the Council and its partners. Those events will be advertised on the news and events and what's on pages.

People from all walks of life and all professions become non-executive directors. You may have financial and commercial skills gained at a senior level in business, or have legal, human resources, marketing or customer relations expertise. Perhaps you run your own business, or work in a voluntary capacity in your local community. Whatever your skills, you will also need the ability to think strategically and a commitment to the values of the NHS. Interested? School Governors
As a School Governor, you’ll be part of a team. You’ll agree the school budget covering everything from teachers to text books. You’ll decide on the key issues which will help teachers to raise standards and to shape the future of the school. You don’t need qualifications, just the desire to make a difference, a real commitment and some spare time.

Magistrates
Magistrates or Justices of the Peace (JPs) are volunteers from all walks of life who deal with around 95 per cent of criminal cases in England and Wales, including many of the crimes that most affect the public, such as anti-social behaviour. If you care about justice and would like to gain valuable skills while serving your community, becoming a magistrate could be the role for you.

Metropolitan Police
There are a number of ways to get involved with the metropolitan police in Haringey. Areas in which volunteers currently support the police include:
- Safer Neighbourhood teams
- Assisting at front counters
- General administration
- Press Office support
- Role-plays for Police training
- Neighbourhood Watch support

Councillors
You may wish to get involved in local politics and becoming a Councillor is one of the best ways to do it. Everyone is needed, especially if you are one of the people under-represented on your local council - maybe you are under 45, a woman or come from one of Haringey’s many ethnic communities?
