Cllr Reith, Simon Garrill and students.Haringey's newest state-of-the art school - Heartlands High - opened its doors on schedule at the start of the new school term in September.

The jewel in the crown of the council’s £214 million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, the Wood Green school specialises in the visual arts and media and boasts the finest school-based ICT, media and art facilities.

Available for the first intake of students are four ICT suites, three multi use games areas, a dining hall and kitchen, along with cycle racks for up to 80 bikes.

The school is now on track to be fully completed by spring 2011.

Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services Cllr Lorna Reith said:

“I’m absolutely delighted that we’re able to celebrate the opening of this 21st century school – and that Haringey students can take advantage of some of the best facilities available in a secondary school anywhere in the country.”

Headteacher Simon Garrill wanted to thank everyone involved in ensuring that students and staff can look forward to using the excellent new facilities – commenting:

“All of those involved in building the school, and preparing for its opening, have worked tremendously hard to ensure that students have the opportunity to learn in outstanding facilities.

“The BSF team, Wilmott Dixons and ICT partners RM, along with staff at the school, have worked together to ensure the best of opportunities for students.”

The borough’s BSF programme has helped modernise twelve local schools. These include Gladesmore Community School, Tottenham, which now has outstanding maths and science facilities, to go with its outstanding Ofsted rating; Highgate Wood School’s new dining area and learning resources centre; and a state-of-the art Inclusive Learning Campus at Woodside high school, Wood Green, catering for pupils of all abilities, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The programme has also upgraded computer systems at all local secondary schools – giving students and staff access to all of the equipment, software, networks and support required to get the most out of their lessons.
